About Joe R. Allen
Joe Allen earned a Master of Education degree in school administration from Stephen F. Austin
University in 1968. Allen spent 31 years in the Crane, Texas, Independent School District, ultimately
holding the role of Superintendent 1988-1993. Allen was selected as Region 18 Chairman for the 1992-
1993 school year.
Following retirement, Joe resumed a life-long interest in archaeology. His historical/archaeological study
of Horsehead Crossing on the Pecos River in Crane County and of Castle Gap in Upton County resulted in
a paper which he presented to the Texas State Historical Association in March 2003.
Joe met and began working with historical researcher and author Dr. Glen Ely on the various Butterfield
Overland stage stops in Texas and other similar historic sites. He again presented his work to the TSHA,
and Dr. Ely published The Texas Frontier and the Butterfield Overland Mail – 1858-1861, in which he
credited Joe’s work.
