Ashton Thornhill is a fine art photographer currently working on the Llano Estacado of Texas. He spent several years working as a photojournalist before he returned to his alma mater, Texas Tech University, to share his love of the medium and teach photography. After almost three decades in the classroom, he retired to devote his considerable talents to developing his own portfolio. Lessons learned first-hand from study with Annie Leibovitz, Ansel Adams, Cole Weston, W. Eugene Smith, Gene Richards, and Keith Carter among others informed his work as a black and white, silver gelatin, photographer in the 60s and 70s. With the advances in digital image making, and eliminating the toxic chemicals and wasted water of the silver gelatin age, Thornhill now creates his photographs digitally and prints with the finest color inks and most stable papers available. The large scale, color photographs selected for this exhibition are a testament to his skill as a photographer, eye for available light and his genuine affection for the off road wonders of West Texas.
