Illustrated Happy Hour: Andy Warhol – Space Fruit + Old Fashioned Cocktail

It’s That Retro Week Illustrated Happy Hour and we are throwing back to Andy Warhol’s ‘Space Fruit” series from 1977 from the collection of The Grace Museum. Check out this print series while sipping on an Old Fashioned as taught by Krystalle at Cypress Street Station! Then paint along at the end.

Andy Warhol (1928 – 87) is one of the most well known American artists of the 20th century.  In the late 1950’s and 1960’s, Warhol reacted against nonrepresentational Abstract Expression by focusing on  common objects from popular culture. Pop Art was seen as an assault on accepted aesthetic conventions. Departing from his well known Marilyn Monroe and Campbell Soup subjects, Warhol returned to the time-honored subject of still life for his Space Fruit series. The prints suggest a Pop Art homage to famous still lifes by Cézanne and Matisse. Warhol’s  delicately lined surfaces and flattened planes of bright color  energize the space with the his signature wit and color play.  Each print is signed by the artist and bares the mark of Atelier Grippi, New York where they were hand pulled and printed in May of 1979. This set of prints is 40th from an edition of 150.
